The EGU General Assembly 2019(Vienna | Austria | 7–12 April 2019)
Session: ITS6.5/NH9.19/HS11.12
Topic: Major natural disasters in metropolitanareas: risk analysis, impact assessment, and mitigation
Convener: Xun Sun,Maura Allaire, Bruno Merz
With rapid population growthin urban areas, major cities around the world face increasingly complex andsevere risks due to natural hazards. In particular, losses due tohydro-climatic disasters have considerably risen in recent years. Manymetropolitan areas are located in especially vulnerable areas, wherepopulations and high-value assets are concentrated. This challenge isincreasingly recognized, and has been included as a Sustainable DevelopmentGoal to “Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient andsustainable”. To inform these efforts, natural hazards research is crucial fordeveloping new approaches for comprehensive risk analysis and mitigation.
This session aims to stimulate discussion of new challenges andpotential solutions for metropolitan areas. Especially relevant are newapproaches for multi-hazard risk analysis, effective disaster response and riskmitigation, and managing residual risk. We encourage research that incorporatesbroad disciplinary knowledge from fields such as civil engineering, climatescience, hydrology, economics, public policy, and sociology. Topics of interestinclude:
- Comprehensive riskassessment methods based on multi-hazard, multi-scale and multi-process models
- Analyses of disaster lossesthat encompass property and infrastructure damage in addition to broadereconomic and social impacts;
- Integrated approaches fordisaster response and emergency assistance;
- Post-disaster recovery andreconstruction based on environment carrying capacity and resilience;
- Novel mitigation actions andrisk prevention strategies;
- Risk sharing strategies,including insurance (traditional or index-based) and catastrophe bonds.
